Why We are Making Masks

As entrepreneurs we took the decision to help in the Mask making initiative for three reasons.

Firstly:
South Africa needs clothes masks, to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus, and ensure surgical and N95 masks are kept for medical professionals.

Secondly:
To help out of work seamstresses and small scale home producers make some income during this crisis, keeping more of us afloat during these difficult times

Thirdly:
Any profits will go to paying salaries for the 60 staff we have had to put on TERS UIF benefits.  Surplus profits will be donated to the Solidarity Fund to help further fellow South Africans in need.

Why you should buy a Shield Cloth Mask

Once the virus hits, countries run out of medical grade (N95) face masks very fast. Then people in the front lines of the fight against the virus cannot get proper protection.
The first hospitals have already closed and their medical staff quarantined in South Africa. Because they did not have proper protection.

You can help protect the people who are protecting us.

Get a cloth mask you can wear every day, and easily sterilize with hot water. And leave the medical masks for the people who are risking their lives to protect us.
Can’t afford to buy one? Here is our super simple pattern. And here is our video that will show you how to make you own.

We make 100% cotton cloth masks for the public.
So that we can reserve the real medical masks to protect our first responders, medical staff, police, the army and all people who have to risk their lives every day to protect all of us.

The National Department of Health (NDoH) requested in April 202 that all citizens wear a cloth mask when out in public. This request was repeated by the president in his 23 April address. Surgical masks and N95 masks should be left for medical professionals.

What do the experts say?

According to the World Health Organization the virus is spread from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth, which are expelled when a person with COVID-19 coughs, sneezes, or speaks. These droplets are relatively heavy, do not travel far and quickly sink to the ground. People can catch COVID-19 if they breathe in these droplets from a person infected with the virus. This is why it is important to stay at least 1 metre (3 feet) away from others. These droplets can land on objects and surfaces around the person such as tables, doorknobs and handrails. People can become infected by touching these objects or surfaces, then touching their eyes, nose or mouth.

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, recommends that we wear cloths masks as follows:

  • When going out in public,
  • In places where social distancing is difficult to maintain; e.g. At grocery stores, shops, petrol garages,
  • Areas where you are more likely to be exposed the virus, such as pharmacies, doctors’ offices, clinics, hospitals,
  • Places where there are many people using the same facilities every day, like the train, bus, taxis, Uber vehicles,

The National Department of Health (NDoH) requested in April 202 that all citizens wear a cloth mask when out in public.  This request was repeated by the president in his 23 April address. Surgical masks and N95 masks should be left for medical professionals.

“Wearing masks is important. We want to recommend widespread use of masks. We are recommending that people can use cloth masks, just make sure there’s a three layer kind of thing.”

Dr Zweli Mkhize, Health Minister
